Queensland flood victims can now receive emergency payments from Centrelink, Services Australia has announced. The northern Sunshine Coast has experienced heavy rainfall since late January, with military helicopters delivering essential supplies to isolated communities.
People unable to work because of the floods can now access Centrelink’s Disaster Recovery Allowance. The payment matches JobSeeker or Youth Allowance rates, according to Services Australia, and can be claimed for up to 13 weeks.
“Natural disasters can affect families both physically and emotionally,” the government agency stated. “Our social workers offer brief counselling sessions and can connect you with support services if you’re struggling.”
