The Australian Government is offering substantial financial assistance to tertiary education students, with eligible individuals potentially receiving up to $5,000 through Centrelink’s Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) program.
Services Australia has announced that applications are currently open for the TAP, which specifically assists students relocating from regional or remote areas for their studies. The payment structure is differentiated based on location:
- Outer regional/remote area residents: $5,000 disbursed in two instalments
- Inner regional area residents: $3,000 as a single payment
This initiative addresses a significant educational disparity, as evidenced by Country Education Foundation data indicating that regional and rural students are 20% less likely to pursue tertiary education compared to their metropolitan counterparts. Current statistics show that while 48% of city-based 25-34 year-olds hold tertiary qualifications, this figure decreases to approximately 20% in regional areas.
Eligibility Criteria for TAP:
- Australian residency status
- Regional or remote area residence
- Relocation requiring 90+ minutes of public transport from home
- Year 12 or equivalent completion
- Enrollment in Certificate IV or higher within 12 months post-Year 12
- Age requirement: 22 years or younger at course commencement
- Parental/guardian combined income below $250,000
Additional Financial Support Options:
- Youth Allowance: For students/apprentices ≤24 years or jobseekers ≤21 years
- ABSTUDY: Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Relocation Scholarship: Annual payment for eligible Youth Allowance/ABSTUDY recipients
- Student Start-up Loan: Bi-annual voluntary loan of $1,273 for higher education students

Hi, I hope you are doing well. I’m curious if international students are eligible to receive the $5,000 cash bonus from Centrelink.
Can the government provide any support or help to a single mom who is an international student?
